Minority Women


This series explores misogyny within Chinese minority cultures that can be widely reflected on a worldwide stage. They show the hypocrisy of how femininity is held in high regard, while in reality these women are subjugated by patriarchy to match the unrealistic expectation due to androcentrism.

The Zang— Housewife

    Foot-binding starts as fashionable impulse in China, until band in 1912. Foot-binding was considered as an attractive quality, which shows a girl’s expected expression of liveliness, shyness and tolerance.

The Dulong — Face Tattoo

    People believe facial tattoos were the main adornment for women, tattoos makes them more beautiful. 

    The definition of feminine beauty in human history is always built on some extremely physical torment in the name of beauty.

The Miao — Witchcraft

    There is a rumor about Miao girls who can make a poisonous drink "Gu" with wild insects and herbs.

     People demonize Miao girls and are afraid of their witchcraft. But in fact, it's just the presentation that roots from misogyny.

The Naxi — City of Date

    The tourism culture made Naxi’s town named as "City of Dating" or "City for One Night Love". 

    There is an incorrect misconception that Nazi women are available and interested in sexual exploitation.
